thursday - paros

Thursday: This morning taught another t’ai chi class. Jane Pack showed me her work. Jane created twelve new oil painters, and I helped as much as I could. In the evening Ageliki, who will be giving a mosaic class this semester, gave an interesting lecture on her subject in apologetic but perfectly serviceable English. It struck me that certain periods of late Roman mosaic images look Picassoid.

Tomorrow, Efrosini, who just published a book on the Fayum portraits, agreed to give me an encaustic demo since I won’t be here for the one she gives to the group. (Encaustic was the painting medium for thousands of years. The Greeks called their paints “waxes” the same way that we call them “oils.”) Then, one of three things will happen:

  1. I will luck out with a Saturday plane reservation and stay on Paros another day,
  2. I won’t, be obliged to leave tomorrow on a ferry in the afternoon, and check into a hotel in Athens for the night,
  3. take a midnight ferry back to Athens, and arrive at 5:30 am for a 3 pm flight.

Wish me luck.
