chuck close in miami

Chuck Close came to Miami this weekend for his opening at the Miami Art Museum. Here he is onstage at the Miracle Theater in Coral Gables, about to give a talk, this past Saturday.

At the opening, um, this happened to my catalogue. It made me happy.

He's a really nice guy. The show is great and I'm going to say so in 600 words for Street this week.

I enjoyed this show as well (at UH). Chuck Close is clearly a master of his craft, not to mention seemingly patient as a saint. I loved seeing all the huge plywood "blocks" used for Emma, but my real favorites were the paper pulp pieces, which I'd never seen before. Not only did they feature the now-famous (but still highly clever) pointilistic touch, they also had a surface tactility I'd never seen in a print. (I hope Miami is also playing the video showing his marvelous custom-built studio, as well as biographical interviews with him and friends. That was as enjoyable as the work.)
