Go See Updates

Post #1200 • June 26, 2008, 3:49 PM • 3 Comments

I did a big push on Go See Art this week. It now serves opening receptions, of which there are a couple dozen on Saturday in LA this weekend. Views of spaces now include current and future exhibitions. Views of exhibitions now include openings. I still need to do a lot to it, but it ought to meet anyone's gallery-going needs in Los Angeles at this point, and I daresay it's more usable than anything else on offer. Thanks for bearing with the silence.

L.A. has 28 opening receptions on a single Saturday? Shoot-a-mile!

I just looked at Go See Art. I don't live in LA, and I'm not really familiar with the area- where is Santa Monica relative to Culver City, or Venice, or Beverly Hills? I have a vague idea, but I don't really know my way around. Were I to plan a trip that included visiting galleries I would want to plan my tour by location- the galleries in this neighborhood today, the galleries in that neighborhood tomorrow. How do I know that on one evening I can walk to five different openings without getting out a map and figuring that out myself? Go See Art doesn't let me see things by location, it seems to be a tool for people already very familiar with the area. Any plans to to incorporate other views into this tool, or is the assumption that it will be used by people who already know the scene?

I have a cheap solution ready to roll for that - to sort exhibitions by zip code. I also have a subregion field in the db that I could use for neighborhoods, but that leads to horrendous taxonomy problems. I have acquired a book on GIS and I'm hoping I'll find a solution there. I agree - that would be helpful.
