Post #646 • October 17, 2005, 6:39 AM • 19 Comments

I'd like to express my enormous gratitude to the State of Florida Division of Cultural Affairs for awarding me an Artist Enhancement Grant, for the purpose of attending a four-week residency at Stock 20 in Taichung, Taiwan, starting the second week in December. I'd like to extend my thanks to Stock 20 for the wonderful opportunity.

Fēicháng gǎnxiè.

You got it, Lol. Nothing on this blog except jealousy-inspired criticism and arrogance-inspired expressions of gratitude, with nothing in between. Thanks for reading.

Hm. Well, I don't know about that. But by all means: congratulations. It sounds like a very exciting opportunity and a fascinating trip. Best,

Sorry, JL - sarcasm got the better of me this morning. Thanks to all for the congrats.

Incidentally, if you don't have Chinese loaded into your computer or your browser doesn't support it, you may be getting something besides the characters for "fechang ganxie" in the title. Maybe question marks, maybe dead character icons.

You do tend to toot your own horn but perhaps it is an insecurity complex. Good for you anyway, tootie!

Franklin, there must be some official source for research grants into things like the level of masochism and unreasonableness among blog readers. It would appear to be higher than expected, what with so many people persisting in visiting blogs they can't stand, and implying such blogs are somehow delinquent for failing to cater to these people's preferences. Maybe the National Psychiatric Association...

yeah, you create and maintain a blog that keeps a very high level and inspires all kinds of of interesting action and keeps a civilized intelligent level of discussion and that, quite naturally, of course, pisses people off, so when you get something you are proud of and say so you become an egotistical jerk.

Just tell them to shove it.

In the meantime, I am going become an "essencialist" and join the illiterate horde.

Jack, it's been quite a study in human nature, hasn't it. I'll tell you, I've been at this for two and half years, and many people have not figured out that hurting my feelings requires an awl. Too, they know they can say whatever they're thinking to my face. They don't though. Never have. I know what they're made of. And that persistent direct correlation between positivity and writing acumen speaks for itself.

Mek, I'm pretty much going there to make art, and interact with the public when called upon to do so; I think a public talk or two, and some studio visits. They're giving me studio space, a room, and a little credit at the facility cafe. It's hard to tell from the site, but they're a multi-function arts residency; they have a black box theater and some rehearsal spaces in addition to the art studios. Should be a nice crowd.

Also, a school came from Taiwan to particiapte in a pushing-hands competition at a tournament I went to in Orlando in August, and I have the business card of the teacher, who trains not too far from Taichung. I can't read anything on it except the phone number, but I'll try to meet up with them as well.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that I collect server records with comments, so it's pretty easy to tell who is using multiple identities.
