the substance of style

The Atlantic interviews Virginia Postrel, author of The Substance of Style. Postrel is a libertarian whose book covers what some commentators see as an aesthetic revival in contemporary culture. I think art is going to have an aesthetic revival as well, and it may be along these same philosophical lines.

Postrel lives in Dallas, where Frederick Turner teaches at the University of Texas. Turner is the author of The Culture of Hope and Beauty: The Value of Values. Turner’s belief in beauty is so pervasive that he thinks that flowers reflect the aesthetic preferences of bees. If the aesthetic revival becomes an identifiable movement, its center may be Dallas.

Thanks ArtsJournal.

UPDATE: Postrel has a blog.
