WDBA would be a good name for a radio station

Ladies and gentlemen, the Walter Darby Bannard Archive.

His bibliography and three articles have been installed into the database so far. More are coming.

I did say I was busy, didn't I?

Just for the hell of it, I put up Craft and Art Envy (1986) and "Morris Louis," by Michael Fried (1971), so that makes five.

Try reading some before you judge, Notafan. You might even find it interesting.

it's spelled "Caesar", by the way.

nice addition. just purchsed about 40 or so old artforums on ebay over the last few weeks.

franklin with your writing ability and interests you could turn artblog into a monster. could be wrong, but a money making monster that provided a great service. and who does not like money or great service? with your talents you could really make this work, but you need to think bigger, and maybe get some cheap help (not me).

first i think you need a plan and mission statement for yourself. artblog is a great name, which provides a good service and that is a great start in making the "theartpage".com.

i am sure you have many other ideas, why have they not materialized on these pages? it is a big job for someone to capitalize on. considering the numbers and material that this site occassionaly puts up, i keep waiting for you to be that person.

call me crazy , but i feel you are poised for a break out if you put the time into this. this market is still way untapped and ripe for someone to take the lead. am i wrong? is it already being done? well?

it's not a bad thing, but maybe it is not for you? just thinking because i'd like more and thought maybe you needed a push.

a loyal spy.

1, I appreciate the appreciation.

The timing is tricky. It has taken a few months to move into my new city. Right now, 'tis the granting season. (I actually, stuff comes due in September, but I'm trying to do things when they ought to be done rather than the last freaking minute.) Then, I have a show in October, for which I have been pulling seven-hour days in the studio when I'm not grant-writing. These take priority.

You're right, I have a lot of ideas that haven't materialized yet, but putting up WDBA and ArtAnatomy.com was part of the effort to clear the backlog. Another realized project was the Cafe, which has been a bust. That's good, actually, because until I saw the result I didn't have an answer to an important question about growing Artblog.net - did people want more ways to participate? The answer is no. That spares me putting together other forums and functions within Artblog.net so I can concentrate on making the blog itself work better. (And Item One is this wretched "Please close this window and refresh the main page to see your post" comment system. It makes me want to hit myself in the head.)

The future, then, at least the immediate future, is polishing what I have here already, not expanding. My goal is to arrange things so that you can wake up, pour yourself a cup of coffee, check your e-mail, and find a good pice of art criticism waiting for you at Artblog.net four days a week, with an intriguing, piquant roundup on the fifth. I'd like one of those pieces to be a publication of the sort I was playing around with late last year - there's a lot of untapped potential in that format. We're closer to that than may appear at the moment. Soon the galleries will start opening back up, I'll have figured out the lay of the land a bit better, and my grants will be out of the way.

As for "...a money making monster that provided a great service. and who does not like money or great service?" The implied question is an excellent one. No one has a good answer. The price of information has become very cheap. But we're close to a development on that as well. I've located a t-shirt printer I like in Somerville, so there will soon be a store where the cafe is. The other two extant revenue models are advertising and subscription, and as much as ads offend me, restricting content offends me more. But that's further down the road. I want to make sure that the product is solid first.

Let me know if you have other concerns I haven't addressed.

Nice list of essays.

It is unfortunate that only six are accessible to read.

It is also amazing that this guy spends most of his waking hours reading and responding to foolish bloggery, with such an impressive list of "important" essays. such as ....

Letter of comment (1996)
Consumer Reports, June 1996, p. 4.

This is truly a great service to the art world.

thank you?

It is unfortunate that only six are accessible to read.

Dude. I just loaded over 130 rows into a database and coded a front end for it from scratch.

Check back regularly, as new items will be appearing incrementally. Artforum articles and the ones in still-operating publications need clearances, so check the other items first.

Hop to it.

I will not rest until I can read the Letter of comment (1996)
Consumer Reports, June 1996, p. 4.

I'm sure its Pulitzer material.

rock on!

Not really. Just an expression of gratitude for an article about hemochromatosis, which affects his family. It would probably be okay to rest.

franklin: did you ever write anything about the "big juicy painting" show at MAM or had you left? i can't remember.

it would be interesting to hear what you or WMD, i mean WDB, had to say.

Caryn, I had left the month before. I think Jack saw it, and thought it was the same old same old at MAM, if I recall.

And i think there were some comments to the effect that it wasn't very juicy, after all.
